Clip of the Week: Orkestar Kriminal belting it out on Shtetl
Ganovim-loshn (thieves’ language) was the Yiddish sung in the inter-war underworld of Warsaw, Odessa and Istanbul. Along with their Yiddish gangster repertoire, Orkestar Kriminal has absorbed the Rebetika Mortika hash den anthems of the 1930s Greek underground. They can also perform in Khmer, Danish, Romani, and Ladino.
This week’s clip of the week features a live, passionate performance on Shtetl on the Shortwave. Take a listen to hear Shtetl on the Shortwave and the Orkestar partying it up with sounds from the seedy underworld in celebration of 25 years of independant radio on CKUT.
