In Conversation with Rickey D
**CKUT’s 30th Anniversary Oral History Project ** – because our history is your history.
In celebration of 30 years on the FM dial, CKUT will be hosting a number of oral history events exploring the CKUT community and the Montreal scene. We are kicking it off with this one:
A Conversation With Rickey D, independent hip hop promoter and host of Sound of Soul (Sundays midnight - 1am), alongside host Malik Shaheed. This event will include a public interview and an audience Q&A with this Montreal legend.
Rickey began booking and promoting shows in 1985 with Run DMC, and the rest is history – he has brought SO many acts to this city including the Fugees, LL Cool J, WuTang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, and Yasiin Bey’s (Mos Def) farewell tour. He has promoted parties, comedy, gospel, and even a hard rock gig or two; but at the end of the day if it’s hip hop, Rickey is likely behind it. His website mentions the time he went to Plattsburg to bring the late great Christopher Wallace (aka Biggie Smalls) across the border. What happened next? You’ll have to come to this event to find out.
We’re going to dive into Rickey’s deep bank of memories and have him recount some of the highlights and struggles of his 32 years in the grind. How did he do it? What knowledge does he have to pass on? What are some of the more memorable experiences? He’ll be dishing about the big shows, the small shows, and all the logistics and crazy stories in between – plus much more.
Sunday October 15th - at Art Gang, 6524 Saint-Hubert Doors 4pm - talk begins 4:30 Tunes spun by DJ Pro-V Free, 18+ Wheelchair accessible.
