FEEDBACK FROM LISTENERS

Feb. 6, 2003
The Homelessness Marathon was amazing... inspirational and jarring. I slept with my radio on and woke up to catch glimpses of what was happening overnight. I will now go to sleep each night grateful of the bed I have to sleep in yet wondering how comfortable, warm, and safe those on the streets are.
Thank you. miri f. (mcgill university)

Attn: General Manager (CKUT-FM),

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the recent community network programme which emanated from a cafe at Amherst & Ontario Streets in Montreal. I listened to it over CKLN-FM (88.A) in Toronto. Stand up and take a bow, you've done the radio medium proud. Why can't the English and French radio networks of the CBC do the same type of spontaneous programming with the $750 million it receives for its allotment from parliament? You've prove that it doesn't require an expensive outlay of monetary instrumentation to do such an outstanding programme such as the recent network transmission on homelessness. In January of 2002, I assisted a homeless man to get off the street utilizing the resources and information at my immediate disposal. If everybody assisted just one homeless person to 'get a leg up', we would go a long way to eradicate this decades old situation.

I look forward to more such radio programming in the future ... .

Thank you for your interests, Dwight W. Poole Toronto, Ontario

FEEDBACK FROM STATIONS

Dear All,

From myself and on behalf of other programmers at CHLY Radio Malaspina, in Nanaimo, B.C., I would like to thank you for all the hard work and dedication that you and your team at CKUT put into making the 1st Canadian Homelessness Marathon possible. You are real troopers, enduring rather nasty conditions to give a voice to the homeless and impoverished people and raising awareness across the Country. I hope that we may join together again for the 2nd H.M. and perhaps for other events. I hope you are doing well and life is good.
Best wishes,

Brett Christensen host of "spacelink",

Member of CHLY progamming committee

Hi -

I was talking to a few people this week who heard the marathon on C101 here in Hamilton and who were very impressed. Good work!
Barry
Hello --
We ended up playing the whole thing after all... I especially liked the stuff after about 10pm, midnite, when you were taking calls ....

kristin - ckln (toronto)

Hey there,

Congratulations on the excellent broadcast! The content was great (I heard about 8 hours of it), and people here seemed to think it was really worthwhile. It was particularly important to provide programming examining homelessness, and it was nice for us to feel some solidarity with campus and community stations in other parts of Canada.

Thanks for all your work, and I'm glad we had the opportunity to participate. As a relatively new station (we're about 3 years old), I look forward participating in more national initiatives like yours in the future.

9:54pm INTRO Here is a piece from CJSR's programme Youth Menace. This excerpt is made up from the voices of children and youth engrained in the justice and child welfare system. You will find on this piece the focus on a wide variety of issues including homelessness (hungry, crimilization and so many other issues). Much (not all) of the background music was written and performed by Edmonton street youth including those interviewed. One part I find very chilling is the scream of a child being restrained by Child Welfare in the background of an interview. The girl being interviewed only reaction was asking if we wanted the door to be shut. As if these restraints are a normal part of life in care.

PRIMER QUESTION: Drugs and homelessness - A sensational mix that promotes repression over help to addicts. Medias are often using drugs and addiction as a general stereotype of homeless people, displaying shocking images and alarming the public. In the next hour we'll gather journalists and social workers to help us see the reality of drugs in the streets.
